Which consulate
is mine?

Jurisdiction depends on your US address. 4 states are split between consulates. Verify before you book.

Why this matters

Every consulate has a precise jurisdiction. If you book at the wrong one, your application can be rejected. You can’t choose the nearest one or the one with the shortest queue.

4 states split between consulates: California, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia. Your county determines the consulate.

Just moved?

Your consulate changes with your address. Here’s what to do:

1

Update AIRE via FAST-IT with your new address. The old consulate transfers your file.

2

If you had an appointment at the old consulate, contact them. In most cases you’ll need to rebook.

3

Don’t book at the new consulate until AIRE is updated. The consulate checks residence.

Common mistakes

Choosing the nearest consulate by distance

Jurisdiction is by state/county, not distance.

Booking before updating AIRE after a move

The consulate checks residence. Update FAST-IT first.

Assuming NJ = New York

Southern NJ (8 counties) falls under Philadelphia.

Ignoring county splits

San Diego (CA) = LA. Sacramento (CA) = SF. Same state, different consulates.

Frequently asked questions

I just moved. Do I change consulate?+

Yes. Update AIRE with the new address before booking at the new consulate.

I live on a border. Which one?+

Your county of residence matters, not the nearest city. Check the table.

Will the wrong consulate accept my application?+

Usually no. Verify before booking.

Temporary address. Which consulate?+

Use the address where you actually reside.

Can I choose one with a shorter wait?+

No. Jurisdiction is by address, not preference.

Found your consulate?

Next step is booking an appointment or preparing documents.
