Why you need the CIE
- Activate SPID from abroad (the only method that works outside Italy)
- Access Italian public services online (INPS, tax agency, health records)
- Travel in the EU and Schengen area without a passport
- Valid ID document for 10 years
Documents required
- Valid Italian passport (or previous expired CIE)
- Codice fiscale (tax code)
- 1 passport-size photo
- Proof of US residence (utility bill, lease, bank statement)
- Consulate payment receipt
Cost
The consulate charges approximately $30-40 (varies by consulate). This is the government fee — not our charge. Our booking service is separate.
CIE + SPID
SPID is the Italian digital identity system. From abroad, the only way to activate it is with a CIE and the CieID app. Once activated, you can access all Italian public services from your phone.
Without a CIE, you cannot activate SPID from abroad. There are no alternatives.
The CIE is produced in Italy and shipped to the consulate. Delivery time: 4-8 weeks from the appointment.
