Why register with AIRE
- Required by law (Art. 6 L. 470/1988) for stays longer than 12 months
- Needed to vote from abroad in Italian elections
- Needed to renew passport and CIE at the consulate
- Needed for consular services (civil status, declarations)
- Avoids issues with Italian tax authorities (fiscal residence)
How it works
Registration happens through the FAST-IT portal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We help you fill out the application correctly, prepare the required documents and submit it to the right consulate.
Documents required
- Valid Italian passport
- Codice fiscale (tax code)
- Proof of US residence (lease, utility bill, bank statement)
- Full US address
- Personal details (place of birth, last Italian municipality of residence)
Timeframes
The FAST-IT application goes to the relevant consulate. The consulate processes it and, if approved, updates the municipal records in Italy. Typical timeframe: 2-6 months from submission, depending on the consulate.
Some consulates require an in-person visit to verify residence. We’ll let you know if your consulate requires this.
AIRE registration is free. The consulate does not charge for it. Our assistance service is separate.
