What doesn’t change

Italian citizenship doesn’t remove American obligations.

US taxes

The US taxes worldwide income. An Italian passport doesn’t change this.

Military service

Suspended in Italy since 2005. You won’t be called up.

Leaving the US

US citizens use the US passport to exit/re-enter. Italian passport is for entering the Schengen area.

Common questions

Do I have to give up US citizenship?

No. Italy allows dual citizenship. So does the US. You keep both passports and all the rights of both.

Do I have to pay Italian taxes?

Only if you become an Italian tax resident (183+ days/year in Italy). Living in the US with an Italian passport creates no Italian tax obligations.

Does the passport expire?

Yes. Adults: 10 years. Ages 3–17: 5 years. Under 3: 3 years. Renewed at the consulate or in Italy.

Can I pass it to my children?

Yes. Minor children inherit citizenship automatically. Not changed by Law 74/2025.
