SPID from the United States.
You need the CIE.
SPID is Italy’s digital identity system. You need it for INPS, the tax agency, health records, municipal services. From the US, the path has one bottleneck: the CIE.

The path: CIE → CieID → SPID
Three steps. No shortcuts from abroad.
Get the CIE at the consulate
Book a CIE appointment via Prenot@Mi. They collect fingerprints and give you a PIN (8 digits, half on one sheet, half on another). Card arrives by mail in 4–8 weeks. Fee: ~$30–40.

Activate CieID on your phone
Download the CieID app. Hold the CIE to your phone (NFC), enter the PIN. The app reads the chip and registers you. From here you can use “Entra con CIE” on any government site.

Activate SPID with CieID
Go to PosteID, Aruba or InfoCert. Choose “Register with CIE.” CieID asks for card + PIN. Provider verifies identity. Choose username and password. Done.

Physical CIE with NFC chip
The card from the consulate. Not a scan.
CIE PIN (8 digits)
From the consulate. 4 digits on one sheet, 4 on another. Keep both.
Phone with NFC
iPhone 7+ or Android with NFC.
CieID app
Free. Update before starting.
Common issues
Phone won’t read the card
Remove the case. Try different positions. iPhone: NFC at top. Android: usually center. Hold still 3–5 seconds.
Wrong PIN 3 times = locked
Need the PUK from the consulate to unlock. Lost the PUK? Need a new CIE.
CieID: “card not recognised”
Update the app. Restart phone. NFC on? If it persists, the chip may be damaged.
Common questions
Can I get SPID without a CIE?
Not from abroad. Alternative methods require presence in Italy. CIE with CieID is the only path.
How much does SPID cost?
SPID is free. The only cost is the CIE (~$30–40 consulate fee).
Does SPID work abroad?
Yes. It’s a digital identity — works anywhere with internet.
How long is it valid?
Credentials don’t expire. Some providers deactivate after 24 months of inactivity. Log in occasionally.
Which provider?
PosteID, Aruba, InfoCert, Sielte, TIM. All free. PosteID is most popular. Same process for all.
