Here's how to register.
If you’re an Italian citizen living in the US for more than 12 months, the law requires registration within 90 days. Since 2023, penalties up to €5,000. Registration is free and online.

Why you need it
AIRE isn’t optional. It’s a prerequisite for nearly everything.
Passport
Required before any passport service.
CIE
Mailed to AIRE address. No AIRE, no CIE.
SPID
SPID needs CIE which needs AIRE. Chain: AIRE → CIE → SPID.
Voting
Ballots mailed to AIRE address.
Certificates
Birth, residence, family — all need AIRE.
Avoid penalties
€1,000/year, max €5,000. Applied by the comune.
How to register
Create FAST-IT account
serviziconsolari.esteri.it → Registrazione. Data exactly as on passport. Dates DD/MM/YYYY.
The account does NOT register you with AIRE.
Start AIRE application
Inside FAST-IT: Anagrafe Consolare e AIRE → Richiedere l’iscrizione. Fill with exact US address.
Print, sign, scan
FAST-IT generates the form. Print, hand-sign, scan to PDF (max 1MB, 200dpi). File 1.
Supporting documents
File 2: Italian passport + US legal status. File 3: proof of residence (utility bill, lease, bank statement). PDFs, max 1MB each.
Address on proof MUST match the form.
Upload and submit
3 files on FAST-IT. Immediate receipt confirmation.
Wait
Consulate: ~50 days. Then the comune in Italy. If FAST-IT says “Trasmessa al Comune” but you’re not listed, contact the comune.
Common mistakes
FAST-IT account = AIRE
Two steps. Account is portal, AIRE is an application within.
PDFs too large
Max 1MB, 200dpi. Compress before uploading.
Address mismatch
Form and proof of residence must match exactly.
Not updating after moving
Even in same district. No update = no mail.
Waiting for the passport
You can register with the recognition document. Passport not needed.

No. Two steps. Account is the portal. AIRE is an application within it.
How long does it take?
Consulate: ~50 days. Then the comune completes in the ANPR. If FAST-IT says “Trasmessa al Comune” but you’re not registered, contact the comune.
Can I register without a passport?
Yes, with proof of citizenship. Many register right after the oath.
Moved within same district?
Still need to update the address on FAST-IT. Otherwise no mail.
Are penalties enforced?
Since 2023, yes. Up to €1,000/year, max €5,000. Applied by the comune.
